West Wind Farm is a fourth-generation homestead and recently planted vineyard. We offer handcrafted Virginia wine from our new winery that serves as a gathering place in Southwestern Virginia. We welcome hikers, motorists, cyclists, motorcyclists, corporate escape artists, picnicking lovers, stressed out lawyers, tired old hippies, Yankee tourists and the occasional wine expert to our breezy hillside.
You don't have to be a wine expert. You don't have to have even tried wine before at all. Come visit with us and see what we have to offer. We think you're going to enjoy yourself.
We knew that cold weather and a shorter growing season would provide us with a bevy of challenges. However, our elevation, cool nights, well-draining rocky soil and other factors go far in making our vineyard unique and in generating a distinct, high-quality crop of grapes. Characteristics of our location will be evident in the wine, too.
According the viticulture gods, we're situated high enough, dry enough, wet enough to be comparable to prime wine growing regions in Central Europe and the Yakima Valley in Washington State. This is perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chambourcin, all of which are well underway under David and Paul's laid-back stewardship. Each year is going to bring new opportunities in the vineyard!
A dream to be a place to be.
Our goal at West Wind Farm is to make small batches of great wine. Equally, we aim to provide an inviting, comfortable locale and atmosphere for its enjoyment. Take in the views, learn about the winemaking process, talk to the winemakers, enjoy a glass on the terrace, find a great picnicking spot -- it's up to you.
Our vineyard and winery is an excellent backdrop for special events and meetings. We have a separate room designed for just that purpose - but the whole place is available, too. So if it's a wedding, a sales retreat, a retirement/anniversary/birthday/you-name-it sort of party, this is a unique, relaxing, fun place to do it. West Wind Farm will always be authentic and unpretentious. We invite you to help us make a name for Southwest Virginia wines.
Helping travelers get lost in Southwest Virginia since 2006.
Suffice it to say, we're close to lots of fun stuff. West Wind Farm is the place to relax after a hike, bike ride or river run. Our local perspective promises lots of help in finding your way to other attractions we know will keep you coming back.
Meet the vintners.
Paul and Brenda (Humphrey) Hric came home to the mountains of Southwest Virginia in the spring of 2005 to Brenda's family homeplace. Here, Paul is able to exercise the growing skills that were once showcased at Country Meadows Nursery & Greenhouses in Greensboro, North Carolina, which he and Brenda owned until 1999.
Not content with only a new home and a 100-acre farm to tend, Paul and Brenda Hric, along with nephew David Manley initiated the events that now culminate with West Wind Farm Vineyard & Winery.
David, having returned to Virginia after a decade of living in both Carolinas, is involved in a little bit of everything here. He basks in the relaxed pace and open skies that his native Wythe County features. During the summer months, you're sure to see him furiously chasing down Japanese beetles, too.
Jason Manley just returned to the mountains of Southwest Virginia after living in Charlottesville and in Greensboro, North Carolina. He makes your visit enjoyable whether he’s behind the bar, keeping the place looking great, or finding useful, tasty, and beautiful items to sell. He makes our lives more pleasant with his hard work in the vineyard and all around the winery.
